Comparison of the DAE results with the old CDR

Note : picture in this page were obtained with Analyse version 1.2. They have been checked to be identical to the ones got with analyse 1.4, exept for one or two pixels here and there.

The Sony (1) and the Memorex are very alike :

Note : this is an animated picture. Animations must be enabled in your browser in order to view it.

They also have the same offset, rip at the same speed making the same noise. According to the rumour, they are both Lite-On clones.

Upgrading the Teac firmware, which mostly allows a faster burst mode, lead to a result a little worse :

Recording the SPDIF output of the Memorex instead of ripping in burst mode was not a good idea :

There was no benefit at all to use the audio chip and it's supposed better interpolation of read errors. In fact, we will see that it doesn't interpolate better than the audio extraction mode !

Here is the comparison between the others :

In red, the Memorex, and very close to it, in pink, the Yamaha 3200 burner.
Under them, the black is the hifi player Yamaha CDX860, recorded with it's SPDIF output. On the extreme left, at the beginning of the CD, it is about 10 db below (one line is 6 db). Annoying clicks are audible in the Memorex file (red) while the Yamaha player sounds perfect (black).
Best of all, in green, the Teac CD 540e, with the 3.0 firmware !
It is remarkable that this drive is on the other hand unable to read the scratches on the DAEquality test CD. The scratches are so deep that all these drives loose the groove and start to wander in the dark, making strange noises. The other ones finally managed I don't know how to catch the end of the CD while the Teac just remained lost forever.

Above, this is the first extraction made with the Sony, that is compared. Here's a comparison between the first and the second one, made 14 days later :

In green, the first one, in red, the second one. There were more errors the second time. Maybe the CDR became a little more worn during this time, I don't know. However, I used the first one in the comparisons above, since it was done the same day as the others.
In the right part, the difference is comparable to the differences between a drive and another, but on the left, differences between drives are higher than the difference between the two Sony extractions.
